National Science Day Celebrations '08

The National Science Day is celebrated on the 28th of February every year and commemorates a very critical day in the history of Indian and International science - the discovery of Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928. At the School of Biotechnology, this special day was celebrated in a memorable fashion by having Dr. Satyajit Mayor, Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, as the guest of Honour and Dr. K.B.M. Nambudiripad, Dean, Amrita School of Engineering as the chief guest. Dr. Mayor, who is a noted Cell Biologist, is the winner of many prestigious awards like Swarnajayanti Fellowship, the Bhatnagar Award and is an eminent scientist of our time.

The celebrations began with the traditional lighting of the lamp followed by the launch of the Society for Interdisciplinary Biology (SIB), an association of the students of the Amrita School of Biotechnology. The first issue of the quarterly newsletter of this Society "Altus" was also released during this event. Dr. Mayor gave a talk entitled 'Exploring the power of 10 in Biological Systems' which enabled a better understanding of processes like endocytosis at nano levels. Dr. Mayor thereafter interacted with students in an informal session, answering questions, and motivating them in the pursuit of their goals.
