Research Interests

The main thrust of research activities of Professor Banerji’s group has been directed towards emerging areas of natural product chemistry and Biotechnology. He gave a new direction to the natural product research by purpose-oriented investigation of the plant extracts following reverse pharmacological approach. During the course of research work, an array of natural products belonging to different groups (medicinal as well as other activities) were isolated and characterized. Many novel methods for the elucidation of molecular structures of natural products were used such as advanced multi-dimensional NMR (1H, 13C, 2H) spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction and  HR mass spectrometry.

Professor A. Banerji has made notable contribution in the application of isotopes in the area of bioorganic chemistry and  biotechnology (biosynthsis, biotransformation, bioremediation). Using single and multiple isotopically labeled  compounds, which were useful in biological and chemical sciences. His recent interest is in the elaboration of mechanism of cytotoxicity (ROS induced apoptosis) of some naturally occurring quinones (in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre, Trivandrum). Some of the natural products from the common edible products were found to have selective inhibitor for cancer cell lines as well as potent antioxidants. These products can be useful as chemopreventive agents.  Professor Banerji has several patents to his credit. In addition to medicinal compounds, he has contributed to other areas also such as natural dyes, biopesticides, bioremediation, biotransformation, high-value agrochemicals.

Professor Banerji has also contributed in the synthetic organic chemistry.  He has developed new synthetic strategies based on organometallics, sono- and photochemistry.  These studies led to the invention of reactions of synthetic importance.  His contribution on modulation of activity of low-valent titanium has led to a conceptual advancement in modern organic synthesis and has opened the fronts of many future scientific endeavors.  Professor Banerji has skillfully used the expertise of the basic research to the applied areas included nuclear fuel processing.
